Janitor
A janitor’s job involves such things as heavy duty janitorial machinery, moving and arranging furniture, and stripping and waxing floors. Actions are generally determined by instructions from supervisors or following well-defined practices and procedures. It is important to have knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, safety rules and occupational hazards.
Some of the key responsibilities in the role are: to regularly check a facility or ground’s state of repair and to make the necessary maintenance and repairs; to report concerns to management; to take care of minor repairs such as plumbing; and to keep the store rooms maintained and set up in good order.
Other tasks may involve ensuring the appearance of the building which is being looked after is kept to standards. Duties such as keeping the area around garbage bins tidy and making sure the rooms and halls are cleaned and set up as required are necessary. Those in the role may also reside in the facility if designated by the manager.
No formal qualifications are needed to fill the role, but a minimum of one year’s experience in the maintenance and cleaning of buildings is usually necessary. The average salary for an experience janitor in Canada is C
