English Teacher
The role of the English teacher is to educate students in the field of English language or English literature. At the lower grade levels, these two disciplines are taught together, while in high school and college they are taught separately. The candidate must be a certified teacher in all cases, and to teach older age groups, a bachelor’s degree in English language or literature is preferred.
To teach English literature at high school level, the job holder must have a deep love of fiction and poetry, and the ability to transfer passion of the subject to the students. In English language, an enthusiasm for the intricacies of the language is necessary. In both cases, planning and conducting lessons will be the central focus of the work.
For jobs teaching younger age groups, it is less necessary to be an expert about either field of English, but a solid knowledge of grammar and an interest in reading literature is needed. For all grades, following a curriculum designed by the province is necessary, deriving lesson plans and exams from it.
The salary for an English teacher begins at C
$40,000 and can rise to C
$70,000 depending on the school and experience.
