Executive Chef

The executive chef is typically responsible for the overall running of a large kitchen. Positions will involve working with senior management of a venue or catering establishment to ensure the smooth running of the kitchen, monitor and manage kitchen staff, oversee stock maintenance, development or maintenance of brand, assist in sales, co-ordinate activities and other aspects of management related to the kitchen, dining room or other aspects of catering.
In most roles, the work involves selecting, developing and delivering new dishes or recipes, overseeing the consistent delivery of quality, health and culinary standards, and control of costs. The work is often performed under great pressure, in fast-paced environments and to rigorous standards, both corporate and industry. Some roles involve significant levels of work designing, planning, implementing and launching new venues.
The remuneration available to executive chefs can be significant but will often demand similarly impressive levels of experience, skill and qualification. At a minimum, candidates should expect to present safe food handling certificates, Red Seal qualification and related culinary degrees. Typical remuneration for a 50-hour work week ranges from C
$40,000 to C
$60,000, plus many benefits, with a median salary of C
$45,000 available.
