A large number of cleaning jobs exist within the hotel and restaurant industry. Cleaners must have a high level of physical fitness and stamina to cope with the day-to-day demands of the job, as the work involves bending, crouching, kneeling and standing for long periods while carrying out routine physical tasks.
Specific duties include sweeping and washing floors, vacuuming carpets, dusting furniture and cleaning bathrooms. It is also often the responsibility of the cleaner to provide their own cleaning products and equipment or restock their employer’s products when supplies run low.
Cleaners must also be of good character, as they may be entering private areas where valuable items are stored. They may be part of a large cleaning team and so should be able to work well with others. Both part-time and full-time opportunities are available and it will often be necessary to work weekends.
