Network Technician

Essential to the IT industry is a network technician, who identifies and troubleshoots problems found by the users of various servers. This person works under general supervision in a number of routine tasks, including: providing technical support to customers regarding software and hardware, installing and testing networking cabling systems, setting up configured network equipment, and providing expert knowledge to end-users concerning optimal installment of software and network use.
People working in this field spend most of their time installing, maintaining, and fixing the Wide Area Network (WAN), the Local Area Network (LAN), microcomputers, data communications, and all related equipment. They are expected to analyze bugs in network systems or application software and implement possible solutions. Successful applicants are expected to be familiar with both PCs and Macintosh and to keep themselves updated on new computer technology. They should have a strong understanding of information systems design, particularly multi-protocol and multi-platform client/server environments. They should also have a thorough knowledge of LAN/WAN theories, practices, and protocols.
Interested applicants should hold at least an associate’s degree, including a minimum two years of coursework in computer sciences. Many employers accept one year of work experience and an MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) certificate. Also helpful is knowledge of TCP/IP. The job holder may also be asked to perform physical activities, including lifting heavy equipment, bending, and climbing. The salary for a network technician in Canada is between C
