Toxicology

The job of a toxicologist is to study the effects of various poisons on the environment, people and animals. The job may involve contact with potentially dangerous materials including mercury, lead and asbestos. Environmental toxicologists will often study samples taken from soil and rivers to see how human interaction is affecting the health of certain areas. The results can also be used to see if toxins are affecting the local population’s health.
To enter the field, applicants will have to have obtained a bachelor degree in science and two additional years of training. Courses available include biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology and environmental science.
Many toxicologists find jobs working for research foundations and government agencies. The work can involve time in the laboratory as well as time spent in the field collecting samples. Those holding a doctoral degree can expect to earn between C
$35,000 and C
$65,000 per year and the prospect for rapid advancement is good.
